We're proud to announce our guest at the roasterie today: U.S. Secretary of Labor Tom Perez.
He's here with Women Employed to acknowledge the passing of Chicago's Earned Sick Time Ordinance and other measures to protect workers--which we support in every way. RE: "On June 22nd, we made history when, with a 48-0 vote, Chicago’s aldermen passed an earned sick time ordinance that covers all Chicago workers.
For the first time, all employees who work in the city have the right to earn paid sick time, regardless of the size of their employer, or whether they are full-time or part-time employees. No longer will Chicagoans be forced to choose between their health and their pay check."
Thanks to these people and organizations for attending today and helping make this important initiative happen: Arise Chicago, ROC Chicago (Restaurant Opportunities Center), Chicago Federation of Labor, Local 881 UFCW, Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law.
Plus, 33rd Ward / Alderman Deb Mell, Alderman Ameya Pawar, 48th Ward - Community Page/Alderman Harry Osterman, Cook County Commissioner Bridget Gainer, Illinois State Senator Daniel Biss, and a representative for Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth.
